Hello lovelies! Happy Saturday! Can you believe that January is FINALLY over? It felt like half the year all rolled up into a measly 31 days. Did you guys do anything fun to ring in the new year? Did you make any bookish (or non bookish) resolutions? This year I didn’t really make any resolutions besides trying to save up money and not buy as many things, whether that’s clothing, books or makeup. And I made my Goodreads challenge pretty easy this year with just 40 books. And I ALSO planned on tracking how long it takes me to read books in my Always Fully Booked planner by Little Inklings Design’s on Instagram. If you guys want me to show you how I set it up, just let me know in the comments. It’s pretty straight forward for the most part.
In the month of January I managed to finish three books! I was super excited that I even managed to finish that many. I plan on doing full reviews of two of them in the near future, too! But I’ll do a mini review of them now.
The first book I finished was A Curse so Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer. I was pleasantly surprised by this one. Now don’t get me wrong I love retellings but Beauty and the Beast has been done so many times I didn’t expect much. Instead of I got a badass heroine who has a disability but that wasn’t her main character trait. She never allowed it to be an issue throughout the story. I loved the character interactions and the slow burn romance/friendships. It was all wrapped up in a beautifully written package.
The second book I read an eARC for was All the Stars and Teeth by Adalyn Grace. This lovely author is on bookstagram and this is her debut! It was a dark high fantasy novel about a princess who’s been kept in the dark about the suffering of her people and who has to tame her power in order to take the throne… but that doesn’t go as planned. I really love the atmosphere this book creates, it was very movie like and I loved how the islands were described and how the different magic systems worked! This is one I’ll be doing a full review on soon.
Last, but certainly not least was my most anticipated January read. I read The Hand on the Wall by Maureen Johnson in eight days. It was the book I read in the least amount of time and also my favorite read of the month. This is the last book in the Truly Devious trilogy (I believe I have reviews on the first two up on the blog) so I won’t go into too much detail in this mini review, but it really tied up the trilogy! I loved getting back into Stevies head and trying to connect the dots and find out what happened before she did (spoiler alert, I didn’t). I’ll be tossing up a full review of the book and the trilogy as a whole within the next week or so!
Overall my January was a pretty good reading month! All of the books surprised me and surpassed my expectations and I’m hoping my current read (The Silvered Serpents by Roshani Chokshi) does the same! What have you guys read so far this year? Tell me about your current read! I’d love to hear about it 🙂
