With her daughter to care for and her abuela to help support, high school senior Emoni Santiago has to make the tough decisions, and do what must be done. The one place she can let her responsibilities go is in the kitchen, where she adds a little something magical to everything she cooks, turning her food into straight-up goodness. Still, she knows she doesn’t have enough time for her school’s new culinary arts class, doesn’t have the money for the class’s trip to Spain — and shouldn’t still be dreaming of someday working in a real kitchen. But even with all the rules she has for her life — and all the rules everyone expects her to play by — once Emoni starts cooking, her only real choice is to let her talent break free.
I didn’t really expect much from this book. I had seen it only posted a handful of times on Instagram and it seemed interesting. Luckily for me it was a Book of the month pick so I added it to my May box.
Your MC Emoni is a 17 year old senior with a 3 year old daughter named Emma. Emoni lives with her grandmother and together they take care of Emma while Emoni finishes High School.
This is definitely a slow book and there’s no action per say, but the writing and amount of culture you see and the way the author sucks you in. You can’t help but want to continue reading. I absolutely adore this book and the amount of talk about curly hair 😱😍. I’ve never seen so many mentions of curly hair.
Getting to know Emoni and her grandmother throughout this story we’re so much fun. The author including teen pregnancy in this book for whatever reasons they had but they did. I appreciated it because teens do get pregnant and it happens. They also pointed out stereotypes of teen pregnancy and all the struggles of what you are looked down to be when your not. My heart broke for Emoni and what she went through.
Overall this is one that will go on my favorites list. This book had me go interested and wanting to know what happens to Emoni when she graduates? Will she go to college? Will she become a chef? I love this book and I hope you all get the chance to read it 💕
