I Read…Some Things? (February Wrap-Up)

Hellooo lovelies! Happy Wednesday! Can you guys believe that it’s going to be March already? It felt like it was New Years just yesterday! I wish I could say that I got a lot of reading done in the month of February, but really, I only read three books…Granted they were pretty beefy books, but nevertheless I didn’t reach my monthly “goal” of reading five books this month. I don’t think I’ll do an actual “TBR” dedicated post for March, sooo I’ll just mention the books I’m hoping to get to at the end of this post! Now, let’s jump into what I read and what I thought about them.

the vanishing stair

First off, I read The Vanishing Stair by Maureen Johnson. If you want a little synopsis of this beauty, I believe I included one in my birthday haul, so check that post out! But needless to say, I think this was my favorite read of the month. It was a nice little detour from my usual fantasy reads. I really do love a good mystery and Maureen Johnson just makes the characters so relatable and flawed that it’s hard not to love them. And I mean it doesn’t hurt things that the mystery is absolutely enthralling. I honestly don’t hear enough people talk about this series. It makes my little YA mystery lover heart hurt.

This was a definite 5 stars all around. You should definitely check it out if you’re into humorous and beautiful writing, murder/kidnapping mysteries, and just all around well rounded characters!

The waning age

The second book I read this month was The Waning Age by S.E. Grove. I did do a review of this one, so please please check that out if you want a more in depth review. Overall, I enjoyed this story, but I felt that there were some aspects of the story that I would’ve liked to see more of/explained better.

I really wish this novel wasn’t a standalone because, like I said, there were certain aspects of the story (like the people called “Fish”) that I wanted to see more of. I’m pretty sure there could’ve been a whole story following those morally grey characters. Sigh. Admittedly, out of the three books I read this month, this one kind of let me down. I enjoyed the writing and the journey, but I felt like there could be more. In the end, I ended up giving this story 3 stars.

king of scarsLast, but certainly not least, I read the highly anticipated King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo.

To be quite honest, while I was excited to get back into the Grishaverse, I didn’t know what to expect when I went into this? It has been so long since I read the original trilogy that the only POV I was REALLY excited for was Nina’s. Don’t get my wrong, I loved Zoya’s and Nikolai’s POVs in the story, but I found myself more excited to see Nina and the journey she found herself on in Fjerda, so excited, in fact, that I skimmed over the other character’s POVs (I know, I’m terrible).

Like I mentioned, I think my favorite parts in the book were Nina and her journey through grief and finding herself. I did, however, really really like the chemistry between Zoya and Nikolai, not necessarily romantic chemistry (but let me just say it’s there LOL) but like their witty back and forth and ALL THE SNARK. I love me some snarky characters. Overall, another fantastic installment in the Grishaverse, but NGL I really miss Kaz. Obviously a 5 star read for me. I am so rarely disappointed with Leigh’s writing that if it had been anything less I would’ve been concerned.

Now, for the month of March I’m kind of just going to let life happen, you know? I’m currently on a book buying ban (my bestie’s and I want to hit up Vegas for Labor Day and my wallet needs a break haha), but I do plan on getting my last few book boxes in March, meaning those will be the last hauls from me for a while. With that being said, I’m currently in the middle of Bloodwitch by Susan Dennard and I just love the Witchlands series. I’m hoping to fly through this one.

As far as what I hope I can get to? I really need to finish some of my anticipated releases of last year…like, you know Queen of Air and Darkness and maybe Muse of Nightmares, but we’ll see where my bookish mood takes me. Sometimes I surprise myself.

Anyway, what are you guys reading right now? Or what was your favorite read of February?
