What if it’s us by Adam silvera and Becky albertalli

Arthur is only in New York for the summer, but if Broadway has taught him anything, it’s that the universe can deliver a showstopping romance when you least expect it.

Ben thinks the universe needs to mind its business. If the universe had his back, he wouldn’t be on his way to the post office carrying a box of his ex-boyfriend’s things.

But when Arthur and Ben meet-cute at the post office, what exactly does the universe have in store for them?

Maybe nothing. After all, they get separated.

Maybe everything. After all, they get reunited.

But what if they can’t quite nail a first date . . . or a second first date . . . or a third?

What if Arthur tries too hard to make it work . . . and Ben doesn’t try hard enough?

What if life really isn’t like a Broadway play?

But what if it is?

Friends this is the cutest book. What if it’s us has made my top 5 of the year. I love Adam silvera’s writing and this did not disappoint. I’ve wanted to pick it up since Adam announced it and seeing so many of my friends raved about it after release I just had to pick it up.

You have two MCs, Arthur and Ben. Both are 17 and meet one morning in the post office. Arthur is staying in New York with his parents while working as an intern where his mother works. Ben is trying to get past a previous relationship with Hudson while also attending summer school with him.

Now I want to point out first how much diversity and representation there is in this book. Arther is white, Jewish and comes from a privileged family, but he also has adhd and that he took adderall for it. Arthur was never shamed for this in the book and that impressed me.

Ben is Puerto Rican and is more ‘white passing’ (I believe is the term) it was brought up one scene when he was talking about how since he was lighter he had more privilege than was his parents or darker skinned Puerto Rican’s did. He lives in a poorer household that doesn’t have very many opportunities, but they love each other and show that in every way they can.

Dylan is literally the best. He was the friend Ben came out too and was completely cool with. They shared clothes and changed in front of one another and Dylan never went into being that stereotypical crappy straight friend. Dylan was one of my favorite characters in this book, he is the best friend everyone needs. He cheered Ben and Arthur on the entire book and gah I just love him.

Arthur’s two friends Ethan and Jessi were so cute and I lived for their awkward FaceTime chats with each other. The entire friend group including Hudson and Harriet were just so good. The way they all tried so hard to make there friendships work, it showed they really cared for each other.

I loved this book so much, Ben and Arthur were the absolute cutest. Ben was always putting himself down thinking he wasn’t enough which was so relatable for me. Arthur completely thought he was too much in every situation. They both seemed to keep each other in check and balance each other out. They were so good together.

The entire plot of the universe and fate bringing them together was so cute and they way they looked for each other and finally got together, gah the feels. Adam and Becky’s writing is so fantastic together and I can’t wait to pick up more of Becky’s books.

Now there is one scene on the train ride home for homophobia, but it is challenged so quickly. There is also a huge panic attack shortly after. So if those two thing make you uncomfortable I would skip.

Overall I loved this book so much. The diversity and the love story the entire friend group made such and amazing story. Adam and Becky did such a fantastic job on this book and I love it. I don’t know what I can even begin to pick up after this that will compare.
